Dive into the story of this gem in southern Corsica and discover how, over generations, Cargèse has celebrated the perfect symbiosis of its Greek roots with the Corsican spirit.
Greek origins
In the late 17th century, Corsica, then under the control of the Republic of Genoa, welcomed a colony of 800 Greeks from Vitylo in the Peloponnese.
Fleeing Ottoman oppression, these villagers chose the region of Sagone to start a new life, establishing Paomia on March 14, 1676. Over time, their community thrived, and Paomia quickly became a gem of the region.
Tensions and exiles
Despite their prosperity, the Greeks’ settlement stirred resistance among the Corsican population, who viewed them as allies of the Genoese. In 1731, when the Corsicans revolted against Genoa, tensions reached their peak. Paomia was looted and burned, forcing its inhabitants into exile in Ajaccio.
The founding of Cargèse
It was not until 1769, after Corsica came under French control, that the story of Cargèse truly began.
Count de Marbeuf, the governor of Corsica, initiated the construction of nearly 120 homes for the displaced Greek families. However, due to the turmoil of the French Revolution, the community only resettled in Cargèse permanently in 1797.
Modern harmony
Today, the fusion between the Corsican and Greek communities has occurred naturally, primarily through intermarriage.
However, each community has managed to preserve its traditions. Names like Frimigacci, Stephanopoli, and Voglimacci remain, living testaments to this rich Greek heritage.
